Belizean Culture is Diverse and Distinct

A country’s culture is determined by the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively, and there is no doubt that Belizean culture is diverse and distinct. The history of Belize is unique in the region. As the only country in Central America to be colonized by the British, Belize is the only English-speaking country in the region, and shares history and heritage with both its Latin neighbors as well as its Caribbean neighbors. Belize is growing in cultural diversity, mainly due to the variety of ethnicities that can be found here.

The main ethnic groups are Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and Maya, all living harmoniously in this one small country. Mennonites, Chinese, and East Indian also make up a large number of Belizeans.

Many of Belize’s marine protected areas along the Belize Barrier Reef and atolls have been designated by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as World Heritage Sites. Additionally, in 2001, UNESCO declared the Garifuna culture a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. Hopkins Village is an example of one of Belize’s Garifuna villages, where guests can experience authentic Belizean culture.
