A couple weeks ago almost 30,000 persons turned out to voice their opinions on offshore drilling in Belize. “96% of all voters said ‘NO’ to offshore drilling” was the result of the Peoples Referendum. Following this event there was an early general election and the Prime Minister was re-elected although it was a narrow victory over the opposition.
The love for this small country and all its natural resources spans from Belizeans to many visitors from all over the world who have visited and enjoyed the pristine nature of the country. Belize has become a special part of many people’s lives. With the head of the Government of Belize posing a threat to the Belize Barrier Reef (the world’s second largest barrier reef system and a UNESCO World Heritage Site) by encouraging offshore drilling, we can only hope and pray that he realizes the negative consequences and rippling effects that drilling will have on this small country and the world.
